How to verify a certificate online
Got a certificate and need to know it is real? Here is exactly how to verify a certificate online — and what a trustworthy verifier should show you.
Whether you are an employer screening a candidate or a recipient confirming your own credential, verifying a certificate online should take seconds — if the certificate was issued properly. Here is how it works and what to look for.
Three ways to verify
- Scan the QR code. Point your phone camera at the QR on the certificate. It should open a verification page that states clearly whether the credential is authentic.
- Enter the short code. Most credentials also carry a human-readable code. Type it into the issuer's verify page (for example,
/verify) to pull up the same result. - Check the issuer. A good verification page tells you not just "valid", but who issued it and how their identity was confirmed.
What a trustworthy result looks like
A credible verifier answers two separate questions:
- Is it authentic and unaltered? The system recomputes a cryptographic signature over the certificate's data and checks it. Any change — a name, a date, a grade — breaks the signature.
- Who really stands behind it? The issuer shown should be backed by evidence (a verified email, a confirmed domain, or a registered business), not a self-typed name.
If a page just shows a green tick with no issuer detail and no way to tell what was checked, treat it with caution.
Red flags of a fake certificate
- No QR code or verification link at all — just a PDF.
- A QR that opens a plain text blob instead of a verification page.
- A verification page on a random domain unrelated to the supposed issuer.
- Details that don't match (name spelled differently, mismatched dates).
